One Cure for Lack of Motivation: The Buddy System


One trick I’ve discovered that works for me when I have no motivation is to find like-minded individuals who have similar goals.  Remember the buddy system?  It doesn’t matter if your buddies don’t have the exact same goals that you do, but they should have goals they want to accomplish and they should be willing to give and receive support.

When I work for someone else, I work very hard for them.  I do everything in my power to get the job done.  When it comes to setting personal goals, I tend to procrastinate and not keep the promises I make to myself.  The biggest advantage for me to having a support system is having someone to hold me accountable.  I don’t know about you, but I need a serious periodic kick in the pants when it comes to my creative pursuits.

When I started this blog, I suggested to my best friend that we connect once a week to discuss our goals and encourage each other.  She has her own blog The Fairly Good Mother.  She is on the west coast, and I on the east, so we do this via phone or Skype.

We review our goals that we set the week prior and tell each other our goals we want to accomplish for the following week.  It’s just a short check-in so we can keep each other on track.  But sometimes, no – usually, life gets in the way.  Is that something that you struggle with?  Do you find it difficult to keep pushing towards your goals, especially when it seems that you keep hitting those annoying life obstacles over and over?

I have encountered many hurdles lately in the pursuit of getting out of my cubicle.  My hand has made it difficult to work on this blog and pursue my other creative interests.  It’s funny how when something is taken away from you, you realize how bad you want it.  I had years to start this blog and work on my jewelry studio.  Then, when I couldn’t use my hand at all, suddenly I couldn’t stand the fact that I wasn’t able to work towards those goals.  It was only then that I finally made the commitment to myself to get off my butt and do something about it.

My dear friend even has it harder than I do.  Her beautiful son has mild Asperger’s and she’s advocating all by herself to get him the right education (God love her).  She’s on numerous committees and is a social networking genius.  She’s had car troubles, food poisoning whilst having a sinus infection, and of course, regular household nonsense that we all hate.  I think this deserves an official for crying out loud!

What’s even more frustrating is that there will be other hurdles you will have to encounter that relate directly to your goal.  I’m not talking anymore about piles of laundry, the water heater bursting, or the kids getting the sniffles.  For example, if you want to be a graphic designer, you may have to go back to school.  Congratulations – you make that first step and register with the school – you are on your way!  But soon after, you encounter problems transferring your credits to your new school.  There is so much red tape it takes you an extra semester to get your paperwork in order.  You realize that you don’t have time to take 2 classes per semester and can only take one.  Or maybe you don’t do well in a class and have to take it over.  My point is – if you want it bad enough, you have to jump the hurdles and keep going.  A supportive friend can help carry you through those tough times and push you when you feel like giving up.

    Well, I have found that sometimes the time frame I put on a goal or task or the list of to dos I write are unrealistic and therefore I set myself up to fail. Personal self-sabotage that is and well, that comes with self created anxiety and stress. I realized that I set these time frames and make these lists so I can change them! However, there is a balance between realistic planning and procrastinating. So don’t try to be an over achiever and want everything done yesterday, give yourself time and have patience when setting your timelines and have realistic expectations. You will then feel more calm and accomplished as opposed to always cramming, racing and often times ‘failing’.
